Ashtadisha — The 8 Vedic Directions

In Vedic Vastu, each of the 8 directions is governed by a specific deity (Dikpala) and carries distinct energetic qualities that influence every aspect of life in that zone.

पूर्व — Purva
East
Deity: Lord Indra

Governed by the king of gods, the East bestows wealth, vitality, and pleasures. Morning sunlight enters from here, making it the most energetically active zone. Keep this direction open with windows and avoid heavy structures.

आग्नेय — Aagneya
South-East
Deity: Lord Agni

The fire zone, ruled by Agni Dev. Governs health, cooking, metabolism, and personality. Ideal placement for kitchen and all fire-related appliances. A strong Aagneya ensures good digestion and family health.

दक्षिण — Dakshin
South
Deity: Lord Yama

Direction of the lord of dharma and death. When properly balanced, it eradicates evil forces and bestows crops, prosperity, and protection. Walls here should be heavier and taller. Avoid main entrances facing South.

नैऋत्य — Nairutya
South-West
Deity: Niruti (Rakshasa)

Source of longevity, stability, and strong character. The heaviest and most stable corner of any property. Master bedroom and heavy storage belong here. Defects in this zone cause instability, accidents, and relationship problems.

पश्चिम — Paschim
West
Deity: Lord Varun

Ruled by the lord of water and rains. Brings prosperity, social connections, and pleasures of life. Ideal for dining rooms, children's study, and gathering spaces. Represents the fruits of one's efforts.

वायव्य — Wayavya
North-West
Deity: Lord Vayu

Governed by the wind deity. Brings good health, strength, and vitality. This zone governs change — in business, friendships, and relationships. Guests and support staff rooms work well here. Instability in this zone causes frequent movement and unsettled relationships.

उत्तर — Uttara
North
Deity: Lord Kuber

Governed by Kuber, the god of wealth. This is the financial zone — keep it open, light, and clutter-free. Ideal for main entrances of commercial properties. A blocked North zone directly impacts financial flow and career growth.

ईशान — Ishaanya
North-East
Deity: Lord Shiva (Eeshaan)

The most sacred zone in all of Vastu Shastra. Governed by Lord Shiva, it is the source of divine wisdom, knowledge, spiritual growth, and success. Must be kept clean, light, and open at all times. The Pooja room and water sources belong here.

Why Vedic Direction Names Matter

The Sanskrit names of directions are not merely labels — they encode the energetic nature of each zone. Aagneya literally means "of Agni (fire)" — which is why the kitchen belongs there. Nairutya comes from "Niruti" meaning dissolution and protection — which is why the heaviest structural elements go in that corner. Understanding the Vedic etymology helps you apply Vastu principles intuitively, not just mechanically.

Shodasha Disha — Advanced Vastu

Beyond the 8 primary directions, Advanced Vastu Shastra recognises 16 directions (Shodasha Disha) — each carrying a unique energetic influence. This is the system used by expert Vastu consultants for precise space analysis and highly accurate remedies.

All 16 Directions Explained

The 4 cardinal and 4 sub-directions are subdivided into 8 additional intermediate zones for precise room-by-room and corner-by-corner Vastu analysis.

1

North (Uttara)

उत्तर — Lord Kuber

Core wealth zone. Open and light. Governs financial prosperity, career growth, and new opportunities. Main entrance of offices and commercial spaces best here.

2

NNE — North-North-East

उत्तर-ईशान संधि

Junction of Kuber (wealth) and Shiva (wisdom). Governs health of male members, new financial opportunities, and clarity in decision-making. Keep clutter-free.

3

North-East (Ishaanya)

ईशान — Lord Shiva

Most sacred zone. Divine wisdom, spiritual energy, water element. Pooja room, meditation space, and underground water sources belong here. Never place toilets or kitchens here.

4

ENE — East-North-East

पूर्व-ईशान संधि

Junction of Indra (wealth) and Shiva (wisdom). Governs education, children's growth, and mental clarity. Ideal zone for children's study room and library.

5

East (Purva)

पूर्व — Lord Indra

Solar energy zone. Morning sunlight, vitality, social reputation. Windows and openings here bring positive energy, good health, and social success into the home.

6

ESE — East-South-East

पूर्व-आग्नेय संधि

Junction of Indra and Agni. Governs anxiety, tension, and confidence. Toilets or bathrooms placed here cause mental stress. Keeping this zone balanced reduces worry and increases self-assurance.

7

South-East (Aagneya)

आग्नेय — Lord Agni

Fire element zone. Kitchen, electrical panels, generators. Strong Aagneya = strong health and metabolism. Weakness here causes recurring illness and low energy in the family.

8

SSE — South-South-East

दक्षिण-आग्नेय संधि

Junction of Yama and Agni. Governs power, authority, and confidence. A well-activated SSE zone strengthens willpower and leadership. Imbalance causes ego conflicts and power struggles.

9

South (Dakshin)

दक्षिण — Lord Yama

Fame, social status, and protection zone. Heavy walls, master bedroom. A strong South = good reputation and longevity. Defects cause legal troubles, health issues, and loss of status.

10

SSW — South-South-West

दक्षिण-नैऋत्य संधि

Junction of Yama and Niruti. Governs disposal, waste, and relationships. Toilets work acceptably here. Defects in this zone cause health deterioration and relationship damage over time.

11

South-West (Nairutya)

नैऋत्य — Niruti

Stability, longevity, and protection. Master bedroom and heavy storage. This is the anchor corner of the entire property. Defects here cause the most serious life disruptions — accidents, instability, major losses.

12

WSW — West-South-West

पश्चिम-नैऋत्य संधि

Junction of Varun and Niruti. Governs savings, retained wealth, and expenditure control. A strong WSW zone prevents unnecessary financial leakage and supports long-term savings.

13

West (Paschim)

पश्चिम — Lord Varun

Fruits of effort, prosperity, and social connections. Dining room, children's rooms. Represents the returns on one's actions. A well-balanced West zone ensures that hard work is rewarded.

14

WNW — West-North-West

पश्चिम-वायव्य संधि

Junction of Varun and Vayu. Governs rest, recreation, and mental refreshment. Guest rooms and relaxation spaces work well here. Defects cause restlessness, disturbed sleep, and lack of mental recovery.

15

North-West (Wayavya)

वायव्य — Lord Vayu

Air element zone. Change, movement, and relationships. Guest rooms, garage, support staff. Governs business partnerships and social network. Instability here causes frequent movement and unsettled business relationships.

16

NNW — North-North-West

उत्तर-वायव्य संधि

Junction of Kuber and Vayu. Governs attraction, income flow, and the magnetism that draws clients and opportunities. A strong NNW zone directly supports business revenue and income generation.

Why 16 Directions in Advanced Vastu?

The basic 8-direction system (Ashtadisha) gives a broad framework. But in practice, a house has rooms, corners, and zones that fall in the intermediate directions — NNE, ENE, ESE, and so on. Advanced Vastu uses the Shodasha Disha (16-direction) system to diagnose exactly which sub-zone is causing a specific problem — whether it is financial leakage (WSW defect), anxiety (ESE defect), or relationship instability (WNW defect). This level of precision is what separates a surface-level Vastu audit from a deep, accurate one.
