In Vastu Shastra, the kitchen is the source of health, prosperity, and family well-being. It governs the fire element (Agni Tatva) and directly impacts the physical health of every family member and the financial stability of the household. A Vastu-deficient kitchen is one of the most common root causes of health issues, unnecessary expenses, and relationship tensions that families overlook for years. This guide by Acharya Arun Pandit covers every critical aspect of kitchen Vastu.
1. Best Direction for the Kitchen
The kitchen is governed by the fire element. According to Vastu Shastra, fire belongs to the South-East direction — ruled by Agni Dev (the fire deity). Placing your kitchen here ensures harmony between the element and the zone, which directly supports family health and reduces conflicts.
South-East ✅
Best direction. Agni zone — fire element perfectly aligned. Supports health and prosperity.
North-West ✅
Acceptable alternative. Vayu zone — wind fans fire. Works well if South-East is not possible.
North-East ❌
Strictly avoid. This is the water and prayer zone. Fire here creates serious health and financial problems.
South-West ❌
Avoid. Earth element conflicts with fire. Leads to chronic illness and financial losses.
North ❌
Water zone. Fire and water conflict causes major health issues and frequent quarrels.

2. Stove / Gas Burner Placement — The Most Critical Point
The stove represents fire, which is the most active energy in your kitchen. Its placement determines the quality of food, the health of the cook, and the overall energy of the home. This is where most families unknowingly create major Vastu defects.
✅ Correct Stove Placement Rules:
- Place the stove in the South-East corner of the kitchen platform
- The cook should face East while cooking — East direction is governed by the Sun, which blesses food with positive energy
- Stove should be placed a few inches away from the wall — never directly touching the wall
- The stove must be at a comfortable working height — avoid placing it too low or at floor level
- Keep the stove clean and in working order — a damaged or dirty stove represents blocked prosperity
❌ Stove Mistakes to Avoid:
- Never place the stove directly under a window — wind disturbs fire energy
- Never place the stove facing North or West — the cook's energy gets drained
- Never place the stove and sink adjacent to each other — fire and water clash causes frequent arguments and health problems
- Never position the stove so that the cook has their back to the kitchen entrance — this creates anxiety and insecurity
3. Sink and Water Source Placement
Water and fire are opposing elements. In kitchen Vastu, the sink (water) and stove (fire) must never be placed next to each other or directly opposite each other. The correct placement of water sources ensures financial flow and emotional harmony in the family.
✅ Correct Sink Placement:
- Place the sink in the North-East corner of the kitchen — this is the water zone
- North is the second best position for the sink
- Maintain at least one cabinet gap between the sink and stove to separate fire and water energies
- Keep the sink drain covered when not in use — open drains allow positive energy to escape
4. Platform / Countertop Direction
The kitchen platform (cooking counter) should be built along the Eastern or Southern wall of the kitchen. This ensures the cook naturally faces East while working. Avoid building the main platform along the Northern wall as this forces the cook to face South — an unfavourable direction that creates restlessness and poor digestion.
5. Storage — Grains, Spices, and Heavy Items
In Vastu Shastra, storage direction has a direct link to household abundance. Incorrect storage placement is a common cause of financial leakage and food wastage in homes.
- Grain storage (rice, atta, dal) — always keep in the South or West of the kitchen. These are earth-element directions that represent abundance and stability
- Spices and oils — South-East shelf, near the stove
- Refrigerator — South-West or South. Never in the North-East corner
- Overhead cabinets — South, West, or South-West walls for heavy storage
- Keep North and East walls lighter — these directions need to be energetically open
6. Kitchen Colours as per Vastu
Colour directly affects the energy of a space. For the kitchen, fire-compatible colours support digestion, appetite, and positive energy. Avoid dark, heavy colours that suppress fire energy.
Yellow / Cream
Best choice. Promotes warmth, appetite, and positive energy. ✅
Orange / Saffron
Excellent for kitchen. Energising, stimulates digestion. ✅
Light Green
Acceptable. Represents growth and freshness. ✅
Red / Deep Pink
Use sparingly. Too much red overstimulates fire — causes tension. ⚠️
Blue / Dark Blue
Avoid. Water element suppresses fire — affects health. ❌
Black / Dark Grey
Never use in kitchen. Blocks energy, suppresses fire element. ❌
7. What to Place and What to Remove
✅ Keep in Your Kitchen:
- A small idol or image of Annapurna Devi — goddess of food and nourishment
- Fresh fruits in a bowl on the counter (North or East side)
- A small copper vessel filled with water in the North-East corner
- Crystal salt lamp on the South wall — purifies kitchen energy
- Clean, functional appliances — broken appliances are a Vastu defect
❌ Remove from Your Kitchen:
- Expired, stale, or rotten food — never store dead food in the kitchen
- Clutter under the sink — water zone must be clean and unblocked
- Broken utensils, cracked plates, or chipped cups — these represent poverty energy
- Shoes, brooms, or cleaning supplies inside the kitchen — these create impurity
- Religious idols or photos inside the kitchen — the cooking zone is not suitable for puja items due to fire and smoke
8. Common Vastu Mistakes in Modern Kitchens
Modern kitchen design often prioritises aesthetics and convenience over Vastu principles. These are the most frequently seen Vastu defects in homes across Haryana, Delhi NCR, and Panipat:
- Open-plan kitchen facing the main door — cooking energies directly hit the entrance, disturbing the home's overall Vastu balance
- Kitchen directly below or above the pooja room — fire energy under a sacred space creates instability in the family's spiritual life
- Toilet sharing a wall with the kitchen — extremely negative. This requires specific remedies
- Kitchen in the North-East corner of the house — the single most common and most damaging kitchen Vastu defect
- Cook facing South — leads to health deterioration and financial problems over time
💡 Quick Kitchen Vastu Checklist:
- Kitchen in South-East or North-West of the house
- Stove in South-East corner of kitchen, cook facing East
- Sink in North-East corner, separated from stove
- Refrigerator in South-West or South
- Kitchen colour: yellow, cream, or orange
- Grains and heavy storage in South or West
- No clutter, no broken items, no expired food
